Barbara was born in 1937 in Aurora, IL, the daughter of Alan Archer and Edith Brackett Phelps. She grew up in Kaneville and attended high school in Maple Park, IL for two years before transferring to West Aurora High School to attend business classes.
While attending West Aurora, Barbara and Harold "Bud" Snyder met. They were married on September 1, 1956. |
They had three children, Brent, Brian and Amy, and five grandchildren. Throughout their lives, Barb and Bud were partners in every way: fifty years as husband and wife and thirty-four years as partners in Steamgard Carpet Cleaners, their family business. It began as an extension of Bud's dry cleaning business, but Barb would become the managing partner at the heart of it all. Her calm and friendly demeanor made easy friends with many customers and her no-nonsense efficiency managed both the business and her family.
Barbara was an active member of the Kaneville United Methodist Church and the Kaneville Historical Society for many years, as well as volunteering for the Kaneville Memorial Day services. She and Bud took many trips to visit Door County throughout the years. She also enjoyed playing Bridge with friends who were card-playing-companions for some forty years. Most of all Barb enjoyed spending time with her family and being a Grandma.
Throughout her life, Barbara was a kind, compassionate, patient and loyal friend to all who knew her. In her final years, while battling cancer, she showed us a depth of strength and courage beyond our imagination. She rarely complained and never gave up. She battled until the very end. Barbara passed away on January 26, 2006 after a four-year battle with cancer.
